Your Guide to CDCP: What Is Covered and What Is Not
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program that helps Canadians who don't have private dental insurance and make less than $90,000 a year get dental care that they can afford. The CDCP can pay for a lot of different treatments if you meet the requirements. This makes it easier to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
At West Metro Dental, we can help you understand what the CDCP covers, what it doesn't, and how to get the most out of your benefits.
What does the CDCP cover?
The CDCP helps pay for a number of important dental services, such as:
Care to avoid problems
- Check-ups and X-rays on a regular basis to keep an eye on your oral health
- Professional cleaning (scaling and polishing) gets rid of plaque and tartar, which helps keep your gums healthy
- Fluoride treatments to make tooth enamel stronger and stop it from rotting
- Sealants are protective coatings that are put on teeth that are likely to get cavities
Services for Restoration
- Fillings help fix cavities and get teeth working again
- Root canals to rescue teeth that are infected
- Crowns to cover and protect teeth that are broken
- Bridges and dentures can help you get your smile back by replacing missing teeth
Services for Periodontics
- Treatments for gum infections and inflammation that don't include surgery
- Abscess care helps get rid of infections around teeth and help them heal
Surgery on the mouth
- Extractions to take out teeth that are too damaged or broken to fix.
- Minor surgeries for various dental problems that are necessary.
Services for orthodontics
- Limited coverage: Some orthodontic procedures will be offered with pre-approval starting in 2025. The program will explain who can join.
What the CDCP Doesn't Cover
The CDCP covers a lot of important services, but not all of them are covered:
- Cosmetic procedures are treatments that solely change how you look, such veneers or teeth whitening
- Braces and other orthodontic procedures are not covered until the program grows (before 2025)
- Implants: Usually not covered
- Advanced procedures: Some complicated treatments may need to be approved ahead of time and may not be completely covered
What are Co-Payments?
The amount of coverage you get depends on your family's adjusted net income:
- 100% coverage for qualified services if you make less than $70,000
- $70,000 to $79,999: CDCP pays for 60% of the costs, and you pay for 40% of the costs
- $80,000 to $89,999: CDCP pays for 40% of the cost, and you pay for the other 60%
These numbers are based on the CDCP fee schedule, which can be different from what your dentist charges. You might have to pay the difference.
